There was a time in my life that changed my perspective on things last year. My dad was having lots of bad headaches and so he went to the doctor's to see if anything was wrong. They never found out what was causing the headaches, but they said that his thyroid was a bit swollen and it would be good to get it checked. He got blood work done. Nothing was abnormal, but the doctor advised my dad to get a biopsy of his thyroid done. This was nothing new; my mother had her thyroid tested for cancer, and she was fine. I wasn't worried; it would be an outpatient surgery. He would leave a little before I went to school and be out before I got home.
The surgery went well. My dad wasn't in any pain. The doctors told him that they would call in a week if the lab results were positive for cancer. Three weeks came and went. My dad went back to the doctor's to get his stitches out. The doctor told them it was good that he came. The doctor wouldn't take out the stitches, because my dad tested positive for thyroid cancer. My dad went in for an other surgery the day after to have his entire thyroid taken out. Later, there was a month that he took radio-active iodine. We couldn't go near him. He had Thanksgiving in the hallway instead of the dining room.
I learned to be very thankful that year; we were lucky. You would have to try to die from thyroid cancer. My dad is healthy now. I also learned how much I love and need my parents. I also learned that no matter how bad I think I have it, it can always be worse. I am glad that my dad got the easiest cancer to treat. But the most important things I have learned are to live life to the fullest. Don't take anything for granted. life is threatened so easily. Bad things don't just happen to a bunch of unfortunate, nameless people.
